Tips For Teachers 2019

Students aren’t the only ones heading back to school this week and finalizing their shopping lists. If you’re a teacher, this week is filled with meeting new students, re-shopping for the things you forgot on your list and very long hours on your feet. According to Dr. Ronald Lepow, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Baylor, “Activity levels of teachers during the summer break can vary – some are less active during the summer months than during the school year, and this can be a factor in getting back into the swing of things”.

For some teachers, re-adjusting to the demands of the school year can be brutal on the body, especially the ankles and feet. Da Vinci Foot and Ankle sincerely appreciates the work and sacrifice of our teachers and we hope that these tips can help you quickly transition from Summer to Fall… pain-free. Of course we encourage all teachers to make an appointment with one of our professionals for preventative care during the school year.

Tips For Teachers

Avoid Worn Out Soles

If you’ve been looking for a sign to buy those new shoes, this is it! However, we do highly recommend investing in the proper footwear (see below). Over time, the soles of your shoes will wear down according to the way that you walk, the pressure points in your feet and how your stride. This happens with all shoes and isn’t a problem until you wear worn out soles for too long. Eventually, the worn out sole will act like an orthotic to your foot changing the reaction chain of your walk and ultimately affecting the micro-structure of the bones and joints in your body. It is very important to switch out shoes which soles are worn down (OR have the shoes re-soled if you really love them).

Plantar Fasciitis – Terrible Heel Pain and What You Can Do

Invest in the Right Footwear

Teachers can be very under-appreciated for the amount of time they spend on their feet. Many of our teacher patients come to our office in terrible pain expecting a surgical suggestion and what they get most times is a footwear suggestion. In many cases, the investment into the proper footwear completely eradicates their foot and ankle trouble. This goes to show you how important it is to wear the right shoes and how detrimental it can be to wear the wrong ones. It will come as no surprise to you that we suggest the following two footwear companies to all of our patients

 Brooks Running Shoes

and

Vionic Footwear

Enjoy proper arch support and comfort, without compromising style! Come visit any of our office locations and one of our staff members will personally fit you for your perfect pair of shoes to keep you feeling good and looking good all school year long.

Purchase a Good Foot Powder

Another common problem for teachers can be excessive perspiration, which can lead to athlete’s foot. We suggest you use a good foot powder to prevent moisture build-up in your shoes. Ofcourse, that you don’t wear the same shoes every day (give those babies time to breathe). Use a shoe tree if you have one! If, however; you do believe you have developed any type of fungal infection such as athlete’s foot, we can take care of you at our office. We offer over the counter and prescription strength methods that will quickly deal with the root of the problem.

Keep Shoes Smell-Free

Last, but not least, what’s worse than leaving a day of teaching to go to a friends dinner party or home to your spouse only to take off your shoes and invade everyone’s personal space with the smell! Gross! Good News: We have an “out of this world” solution for that…

We are Proud to announce that Da Vinci Foot and Ankle is one of the VERY FIRST wholesale retailers of ZORPADS!  Featured on Shark Tank, these tiny, black pads have the odor destroying power of 60 sweaty wears.
