Foot Cramps – Why They Happen and What To Do

Foot cramps can seem to come out of no where, but when they happen they can stop you right in your tracks and be very painful for a period of time. A sudden contraction of a muscle in your foot or leg is not usually something to worry about, but it is typically indicative of an underlying cause that needs attention. From long work hours to dehydration there are many factors that can cause foot cramps. Even something as simple as weather change can bring the cramping on. Persistent problems with leg or foot cramping could be a sign of a problematic medical condition. Some of these conditions include the following.

What Causes Foot Cramps

Dehydration – Dehydration is usually the number one vice when it comes to pesky, painful cramps. It’s always important to stay properly hydrated and to drink lots of fluids throughout the day especially when exercising or working long hours.

Nutrient and Mineral Imbalances – Adequate amounts of calcium, magnesium, and potassium are necessary for your muscles to function properly. Medications, including those that treat high blood pressure, can cause a depletion of vitamins and minerals.  Supplements can often alleviate this problem as well as a healthy diet.

Circulation problems – When narrowing of the arteries occurs during the aging process, it can cause a reduction in blood flowing to the hands and feet. This lack of flow can cause cramping in certain areas, especially the legs and feet. This will typically be relieved by rest and water but if you notice a persistence in this problem we would encourage you to make an appointment with one of our Doctors as soon as possible.

Improper Footwear- Your foot and legs cramps can be horribly painful but also simply occurring from your choice of footwear. Sometimes, simply changing to the right pair of shoes can alleviate most if not all of your cramping episodes.

How To Prevent Foot and Leg Cramps

  1. Stay Hydrated

Some common symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Little or no urine, urine that is dark in color
  • Fatigue
  • Severe thirst
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

If you are feeling any of the above, even after drinking water, we advise you to make an appointment with your PCP or with one of our professionals for care.

2. Exercise Properly and With Proper Footwear

Set a reasonable exercise goal. No matter your age or ability, movement is extremely important to the health of your body and blood circulation. Exercising the muscles in your feet will help to prevent cramping and improve fluidity.

  • Choose a reasonable goal – if all you can do is walk, walk! It’s as simple as that.
  • Choose proper footwear – our Doctors suggest Brooks Running Shoes!
  • Look into orthotics for extra arch support for daily activity.
