Heel Pain
Heel Pain and/or a heel spur can be experienced on the back of the heel (Heel Spur: Achilles Tendonitis), the bottom of the heel (Heel Pain Plantar Fasciitis), or in severe case both places. The plantar fascia is a long band of tissue very similar to that of the Achilles Tendon, however, it extends from the base of the heel all the way to the toes. Typically, pain is experienced in the first steps in the morning after getting out of bed and/or after sitting for extended periods of time. Contrary to popular belief, bone spurs such as a heel spur are not typically the root of the problem. Instead the pain is a result of an inflammation of the plantar fascia where it attaches to the bottom surface of the heel bone or heel spur. Heel pain can develop for a variety of reasons including overuse activity, poor shoe gear, change in shoes, increase in weight gain, new or a change in activities, change in medication, and in some cases trauma. Although it is very common to see a heel spur, x-rays are obtained to rule out other abnormalities such as a stress fracture or bone tumor.
