Achilles Tendon Ruptures occur when excess stress is placed on the “watershed” area of the Achilles Tendon. This area of the tendon is known for it’s lack of blood supply and therefore is the weakest area of the tendon. This weakened area is commonly the location of tendon injuries including Achilles Tendon tears and Achilles Tendon rupture. Located just above the back of your heel, pain is typically experienced as sharp pain while walking or moving your ankle up and down.
Achilles Tendon Injuries
Achilles Tendon injuries are common among athletes due to the constant stress on the muscular and tendon fibers of the Achilles tendon. Football, basketball, and soccer players sustain this injury due to the strenuous impact sustained by the back of the leg from running and jumping. Unless your body is physically trained to accept this high impact and shock absorption, Achilles Tendon injuries are not out of the normal. In fact, these injuries are very common in out-of-shape men ages 40-45 who have become widely referred to as the “Weekend Warrior” within the medical community.
