Stabbing pain, inflammation, swelling and having difficulty walking are just a few symptoms of heel spurs. A heel spur can be experienced in a couple of different ways. One of the most common is in the back of the heel (referred to as Achilles Tendonitis). The other is felt on the bottom of the heel (referred to as plantar fasciitis). In the more severe cases, some people experience this stabbing pain in both places and it can be debilitating.
While heel pain can sometimes resolve itself with natural methods such as stretching, icing and alternative therapies, other times heel pain needs medical attention by a Podiatrist to determine next steps.
What Causes Heel Pain?
Heel pain can develop for a variety of reasons including overuse activity, ill fitting shoes, change in shoes, increase in weight gain, change in activities, change in medication, and in some cases trauma. In rare cases, this chronic tendon degeneration can result in rupture of the tendon or breakage of the heel spur.
HEEL SPUR TREATMENT
A majority of patients suffering from a heel spur and heel pain in general, respond favorably to conservative treatment such as stretching exercises, anti-inflammatories, supportive braces & shoe inserts (orthotics), physical therapy, and cortisone injections. For those who do not fully respond to these initial methods, Da Vinci Foot and Ankle offers laser therapy and surgical options to fully eradicate any degree of heel spur.
MLS LASER THERAPY
Additionally, Da Vinci Foot & Ankle is the only medical practice between Atlanta and Augusta that offers MLS Laser therapy as an alternative to surgery. For those patients not responding to conservative treatment, both Dr. Christopher Menke and Dr. Allison Menke can remove the painful bone spur and restore the Achilles Tendon at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, GA.
